Why Everything We Make Is Stoneware

Every collection we make starts with the same decision: stoneware, fired hot, thrown by hand. It's not the only way to make ceramic tableware — but it's the one we believe in, and here's why.

A Denser Kind of Clay

Stoneware is fired at high temperatures from a dense clay body, which is what gives it that warm, slightly textured feel in your hand. It holds heat well at the table, resists the fine surface cracks that can develop in lower-fired ceramics over years of use, and has enough weight to feel substantial without being heavy.

Rooted in Generations of Practice

Stoneware has been shaped by hand across the Indian subcontinent for thousands of years of heritage — the same wheel, the same clay, the same fire, refined generation after generation by artisan families who pass the craft down rather than teach it from a manual. When we set out to build By The Earth Living, there was never really a question of what material to work in. It's the material that built the table tradition we're drawing from.

What Hand-Thrown Actually Means

Every piece we make is thrown on a wheel, one at a time, by hand. Dried slowly. Fired above 2,200°F until the clay vitrifies — turns dense and glass-like inside. No molds, no casting, no two pieces that come out exactly alike. That variation isn't a flaw in the process; it's what tells you a person made it.

What to Look for in Any Handcrafted Ceramic

If you're shopping for handcrafted stoneware — ours or anyone else's — a few things are worth checking:

  • Lead-free glaze, certified rather than just claimed.
  • Dishwasher and oven ratings, so the piece can actually live in your kitchen.
  • Firing quality — well-fired stoneware won't develop the fine surface cracks (crazing) that cheaper, lower-fired pieces do over time.
  • Visible variation — if every piece in a "handmade" set looks identical, it probably isn't.

Built to Be Used

Every piece is lead-free, dishwasher-safe, and fired above 2,200°F — sturdy enough for daily use, beautiful enough for the nights that matter. Handcrafted in India by artisan families using techniques passed down for generations.
